WHERE ART THOU.. (INSPIRED BY PRISONERS’ TATOOS)
25, August - 05, September, 2026
DOZA GALLERY
Where Art Thou emerged from a series of dialogues between Prof. Dr. Ivaylo Naydenov and incarcerated individuals, centered on the symbols and signs inscribed in their tattoos. Beginning with Christian imagery, the conversations expand into questions of choice, freedom, guilt, forgiveness, and redemption, while revealing the personal narratives behind each chosen symbol.
Artist Stefan Churchuliev, a participant in these sessions, and photographer Nikolay Pandev translate these encounters into an artistic interpretation of the tattoos as a coded visual language. Their work traces the relationship between image, belief, and personal experience, guided by the question “Where are you?”—a question that invokes not only physical location, but also responsibility, identity, and the possibility of redemption.
